Summer means one thing for many families: tracking down that perfect blend of fun, learning, and “please, please, please burn off some energy” in their children’s annual camp experience. Here in Norman, one program manages to strike that balance year after year — Summer Explorers Camp at the Oklahoma Museum of Natural History. Registration officially opened on March 10, and camps run throughout June and July. While a few sessions have already filled, there are still plenty of openings for ages 6–8 and 9–12.

Parents consistently tell us that what makes these camps stand out is the daily “You won’t believe what I saw!” reactions from kids. Each week explores different scientific themes, concepts and activities, but the Pond Explorers session is a perfect example of what makes these programs so special. Museum educators lead campers into local parks, ponds, and trails alongside real scientists and researchers from the museum’s natural science collections. Kids get close-up encounters with frogs, turtles, insects, fish, and more — the kind of hands-on exploration that makes summer days unforgettable. At the same time, hearing directly from working biologists out in the field can spark a lifelong passion for science and discovery.

Museum educator Cristin Floch says the magic happens when kids realize wildlife isn’t just something to watch on a smartphone screen. Seeing a child spot their first frog or sketch a turtle in their field journal is often as inspiring for the educators as it is for the campers, and blending discovery, fun, and a scientific mindset is all part of the experience. Campers are equipped with field notebooks, magnifying lenses, and plenty of time to explore. They learn to observe, ask questions, and make discoveries independently — just like the scientists guiding them.

Feedback from parents is consistently enthusiastic. Kids come home energized and full of stories, and one parent even shared that their whole family now explores nature together thanks to their child’s newfound curiosity. It’s exactly the kind of impact these programs are designed for.

The adventure doesn’t end with summer though. During fall and spring breaks — and on school holidays — the museum offers day camps built around the same philosophy. It’s a great way for kids to reconnect with summer friends and keep that spark of curiosity going all year long.
