Whether this fall is your first time stepping onto the University of Oklahoma campus or Norman has already started feeling like home, there’s always something new to discover around town.
And trust us, knowing where your classes are is only part of the back-to-school experience.
You’ll also need to know where to find a last-minute gameday outfit, where to take your parents when they come to visit, where to grab breakfast after a late night and, perhaps most importantly, where to go when you need a break from campus life.
Consider this your unofficial guide to settling into Norman, one local stop at a time.
Spots to Shop
First order of business: making your new space feel like home and getting your closet ready for an entire semester of “I have nothing to wear.”
Luckily, Norman has plenty of local shops to help with both!
Balfour of Norman is a Campus Corner staple and a one-stop shop for all things Sooners. This locally owned shop carries men’s and women’s clothing, accessories, gifts and plenty of OU memorabilia, making it an easy first stop when your crimson-and-cream collection needs a refresh.
Need a gameday outfit before Saturday? Blush Boutique has all of your needs covered. Located on Campus Corner, Blush carries clothing, accessories, clear stadium-approved bags, gameday buttons and plenty of pieces ready for kickoff.
A Norman favorite since 1986, Cayman’s in Carriage Plaza is the kind of place you stop in for one thing and somehow leave wanting to redecorate your apartment. Along with men’s and women’s clothing and accessories, you’ll find thoughtfully curated home decor, gifts and plenty worth coming back for.
If personalization is your love language, Christmas Expressions should be on your radar. Shop gifts, embroidered makeup bags, robes and other personalized finds. Going through Panhellenic recruitment or already repping your letters? They also carry a large selection of sorority merchandise.
Personalized hat bar? Yes. Permanent jewelry? Also yes! Mave on Campus Corner carries men’s and women’s clothing, but the custom cowboy hats and permanent jewelry make this an especially fun stop with your roommate, new friends or visiting family.
For sorority merchandise, dorm decorations, gifts and the occasional little treat for yourself, head to Occasions in Carriage Plaza. The shop carries Mackenzie-Childs and plenty of other popular brands, so fair warning: you may walk in looking for a gift and walk out with one for yourself too.
And if your dorm room mood board needs to become a reality, make a stop at Tulips. With home accessories, jewelry, purses, gifts and plenty of colorful finds, it’s the kind of place that will have your friends asking, “Wait, where did you get that?”
Spots to Explore
College schedules get busy fast, but your OU experience doesn’t have to begin and end at the edge of campus.
When you have a free afternoon, a break between classes or friends visiting for the weekend, there’s plenty to explore nearby. Even better? Several of these stops are completely free for OU students.
Located right on campus, the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art is home to nearly 17,000 objects along with rotating exhibitions throughout the year. OU students, faculty and staff receive free admission with a university ID, making it an easy way to spend an hour between classes or an entire afternoon.
For a crash course in OU football history, walk through Heisman Park on the east side of campus. The park features bronze statues honoring each of OU’s Heisman Trophy winners. Consider knowing every player represented there extra credit.
You can also travel through more than 500 million years of Oklahoma’s natural history without ever leaving Norman at the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History. Located just south of campus, the museum is home to everything from massive prehistoric creatures to Oklahoma archaeological discoveries, and OU students receive free admission.
Then, once a month, Downtown Norman turns into one big celebration of local art during 2nd Friday Art Walk. Galleries, shops and businesses throughout downtown fill the evening with art exhibitions, live music and special events, and it’s completely free to attend. Fall dates include September 11, October 9, November 13, and December 11, so go ahead and add them to the group chat now!
Spots to Dine
Sooner or later, you’re going to need a break from the dining hall.
Fortunately, Norman has decades’ worth of local restaurants that generations of OU students have built into their college routines. These are the kinds of places your parents will ask to revisit every time they come to town and you’ll probably find yourself missing after graduation.
Classic 50’s Drive-In has been serving Norman since the 1950s, and nearly 70 years later, the neon-lit drive-in is still a local staple. Order a Sprittle, their Sprite-and-Skittles creation, add a side of cheesy pickle-o’s and consider your Norman initiation officially underway.
Blueberry pancakes, the famous Eggarito and Championship Chili have helped make The Diner a Main Street breakfast and lunch staple for more than 25 years. Their chili even landed the restaurant on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives in 2009. Studying the menu beforehand is encouraged.
Speaking of studying, The Library Bar & Grill might be the only library where nobody expects you to open a textbook. Located near campus, it’s a cozy stop for pizza, burgers and a study break that technically still allows you to tell your family you were “at the Library.”
Legends on Lindsey Street has been part of Norman for more than 50 years, making it the city’s oldest independent restaurant. The warm, welcoming dining room, American classics and iconic lemon cream cake have made it a longtime favorite for celebrations, family dinners and plenty of meals in between. And yes, saving room for dessert is practically a requirement.
There are Norman traditions, and then there’s O’Connell’s. The Irish pub has been part of the OU experience for generations of students and alumni, serving burgers and pub favorites alongside weekly Singo, trivia and karaoke nights. If the walls could talk, they’d probably have some stories.
Just north of campus, Midway Deli is the kind of neighborhood lunch spot you’ll be very glad someone told you about. Grab one of their stacked sandwiches, a loaded baked potato or a homemade dessert and settle into a Norman institution with plenty of personality.
Craving pizza or pasta? Othello’s has been a Campus Corner fixture for generations. The current owners are OU grads who worked at the restaurant during their own college years before eventually returning to carry on its legacy. Add weekly live music into the mix and you’ve got an easy Campus Corner night out.
Spots to Grab a Drink
For Sooners who are 21 and older, there are a few Norman institutions worth knowing when it’s time to trade the backpack for a night out.
The Deli is one of Campus Corner’s oldest bars and Norman’s only seven-night-a-week live music venue. Translation: odds are good there’s a band playing whenever you decide you need a night away from studying.
And then there’s the Norman rite of passage known as the Sooner Swirl.
If you haven’t tried one at The Mont, have you really experienced Norman? The longtime local favorite is known for its iconic frozen drink, patio, Mexican-inspired menu and a decades-long history of being the place to gather near campus.
Make Norman Part of Your OU Story
Classes, football Saturdays and campus traditions might bring you to OU, but getting to know Norman is part of what makes living here so much fun.
Find your breakfast order. Discover the shop you always take visiting friends to. Pick your Art Walk crew. Develop an extremely specific Classic 50’s order. Become way too competitive at trivia night.
The places you stumble into during your first few weeks might just become the ones you’re still talking about years from now.
So get out there, explore a little and make Norman part of your OU story.
