The sounds of Ghana are headed to Norman this November, with a free concert at the University of Oklahoma that deserves a spot on your calendar.

From November 11-15, Norman Cultural Connection will welcome the Omanye Music and Dance Ensemble for Roots and Rhythms, a five-day celebration of Ghanaian music and dance. The visit includes educational workshops with local students and concludes with a public performance on Sunday, November 15, at 3 p.m. at OU's Sharp Concert Hall.

Presented in collaboration with the Masala World Music Series, the concert is free to attend.

Meet Omanye

Founded in 2022 by six traditional musicians from Ghana, Omanye Music and Dance Ensemble brings the country's musical heritage to audiences around the world. Their performances feature traditional instruments, drumming, vocals, and dance, with arrangements that draw from both longstanding traditions and contemporary influences.

The name Omanye comes from the Ga language and represents peace, happiness, and well-being. Those ideas are central to the group's work, which focuses on preserving Ghanaian musical traditions while introducing them to new audiences.

Norman audiences will have an opportunity to experience those traditions firsthand when the ensemble takes the stage at Sharp Concert Hall.

The visit also includes classes and workshops at Norman high schools, Kennedy Elementary School, and the OU School of Music. Through these sessions, local students will learn about Ghanaian music and culture directly from the visiting musicians.

Plan Your Visit

Whether you're a regular at Norman's live music venues or interested in experiencing something new, Omanye's Sunday concert offers a chance to enjoy an international performance without the price of admission.

And with the concert taking place on OU's campus, there's plenty nearby to round out your afternoon. Grab lunch at one of the restaurants on Campus Corner, browse the neighborhood's local shops, or explore the university grounds before the performance.
