Did you know that just a few miles east of Norman, there are almost 20 miles worth of hiking and mountain biking trails just waiting to be discovered?

If you haven’t gotten the chance to check out the newly reconstructed Clear Bay Trail System at Lake Thunderbird State Park, you’re missing out!

Whether your ideal outing is a leisurely hike or conquering the more challenging trails on a mountain bike, the Clear Bay Trail System is sure to deliver.

A Trail For All Types of Hikers

The Clear Bay Trail System is home to five interconnected trails, meaning you can build your ideal hike with a combination of several trails. Each of the trails can also be hiked as its own loop!

For beginner hikers or mountain bikers, the Green Loop and the Yellow Loop are likely the best fit. The Green Loop is approximately 1.5 miles, while the Yellow Loop is 1 mile.

The Red Loop and the Blue Loop are suited for intermediate hikers and bikers, with the Red Loop at 1.25 miles and the Blue Loop best for a longer hike at almost 5 miles.

For those who are advanced or expert-level hikers and looking for a challenge, the Gold Loop is a 10-mile trail with many switchbacks. This trail can be quite tricky, as it has a rock drop, a bridge, and several bypasses.

No matter what level of hiker or biker you are, the Clear Bay Trail System is worth a visit (or two)! These trails are also family and dog-friendly, making it a great spot for a family day out. The park also has an ADA accessible trail southwest of the Turkey Pass area.

Getting There

If you’re planning a visit to the Clear Bay Trails, save this information on how to best access the trailhead.

Take Highway 9 to the Clear Bay area and then immediately turn right. There, you will find a parking area that has access to the Green Loop, which will be marked clearly with several green posts. From there, you will be able to gain access to the Yellow, Red, and Blue Loops.

For expert hikers who want to try out the 10-mile Gold Loop, enter the park from Thunderbird Dam Road and find the trailhead on the left side of the road.

More details on navigating the area and all of the trails can be found here on TravelOK’s website!

Know Before You Go

Before you visit the Clear Bay Trail System, here are a few helpful reminders that will help you make the most out of your time on the trails.

As with all outdoor areas, bugs such as ticks and chiggers could be on some of the trails, so using an insect repellent before your hike or bike ride is recommended.

Furry friends are welcome on these dog-friendly trails, but you must ensure that your dog is on a leash.

Helmets are required for all mountain bikers, so don’t forget to bring one along when you head to the park!

Finally, while the trails are free to use, a parking pass is required to park at Lake Thunderbird. Passes can be purchased ahead of time on the park’s website for $8 per day per vehicle for Oklahoma residents and $10 per day per vehicle for out-of-state visitors.
