The 20th Annual Aviation Festival returns to Max Westheimer Airport on Saturday, Oct. 3, giving visitors a chance to see aircraft up close and get a look inside one of Norman’s more unique facilities. Hosted by the University of Oklahoma, the free, family-friendly festival runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

 

The annual open house brings aircraft and aviation equipment together for visitors to explore throughout the morning. Along with static aircraft displays, guests can tour the airport’s control tower and learn more about the people, equipment, and operations involved in aviation. It’s a chance to see parts of the airport that aren’t typically open for a casual visit.

 

Kids can get in on the experience, too. A hands-on hangar and activity area gives younger visitors a place to play while learning about airplanes and flight. Between the activities, aircraft displays and control tower tours, there’s plenty to explore whether you arrive with a serious airplane enthusiast or a kid who simply gets excited every time one passes overhead.

 

The festival also brings a little OU spirit to the airport. Visitors can expect plenty of crimson and cream, along with appearances from familiar Sooner traditions, including the Sooner Schooner and OU mascots.

 

Max Westheimer Airport is home to the University of Oklahoma’s School of Aviation, part of the College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences. Students train for careers in professional aviation right here in Norman, making the festival an opportunity to learn more about the university’s aviation program while seeing its home base firsthand.

 

Now celebrating its 20th year, the Aviation Festival has become a longstanding fall event in Norman. It brings the university, airport, and community together for a few hours and gives visitors access to a side of the city they may not otherwise have a reason to see. And with free admission, it’s an easy Saturday morning outing for families, aviation enthusiasts, and anyone curious about what happens at the airport.
