107th Annual OU School of Visual Arts Student Exhibition

After hosting a virtual exhibition last year, the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art and the University of Oklahoma’s School of Visual Arts will celebrate student artistry once again at the museum.

The 107th Annual OU School of Visual Arts Student Exhibition opens Thursday, April 22 in the museum’s Nancy Johnston Records Gallery and will be on display through Sunday, May 16. While the traditional opening reception and awards ceremony will not take place again this year due to COVID-19 safety protocols, “family days”have been designated from 1 to 5 p.m. on April 22 and May 6 for students to bring their friends and loved ones to see the exhibit. The awards, chosen in part by this year’s guest juror Craig Anderson, will be listed on each winner’s art label when the exhibition opens. Anderson selected over 80 works from multiple mediums, including photography, drawing, video, sculpture and painting from 39 students for inclusion in this year’s show.

“We are thrilled to be returning to a physical exhibition at the Fred Jones this year, and for the public to see the dynamic works selected by guest juror Craig Anderson,” said Pete Froslie, SoVA director. “In our 107th year, the annual student exhibition is the school’s most enduring tradition, and I am proud of the continually high level of work our students produce. We will also be drawing on lessons learned during the pandemic, creating a virtual component of the exhibition that can reach an even broader audience."

Craig Anderson is the founder of Anderson Arts, located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and is a recognized contemporary curator, art advisor and consultant.

“I’m honored to be the juror for this University of Oklahoma art exhibition,” said Anderson in a statement. “I am impressed by the quality, the spirit and the very diverse nature of the artworks submitted for this exhibition. The many highly refined and visionary entries in so many categories bode well for these students’ individual futures and are thus a tribute to the faculty as well.”

Each year, the School of Visual Art's Visual Communication department holds a student design competition to create the branding for the student exhibition. This year’s winners are Lily Nguyen and Blake Jones and their Art for All icon graphics. Their distinctive badges represent different mediums of art and speak to diversity and other prevalent issues in society. It is the designers' hope that visitors will identify with the symbols they have created and that their impact reach will extend far beyond the walls of the museum.
