Six annual holiday events coming up in Norman

The City of Norman's Parks and Recreation Department will host the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and Open House on Nov. 30. Festivities begin with a tree lighting at Andrews Park Amphitheater at 5:30 p.m. before caroling over to the Central Library for hot chocolate, cider, cookies, pictures with Santa along with holiday-themed arts and crafts.

Sam Noble Museum will host its annual Holiday Happening from 4-7 p.m. Dec. 6. Celebrate the holidays and enjoy music, photos with Santa Claus and special discounts in Excavations, the museum store. This annual complimentary community celebration features storybook time with librarians from the Pioneer Library System and special holiday activities with the museum’s education department. From a scavenger hunt for elves hidden throughout the museum galleries to musical performances, this special event is always a favorite of families.

The 2018 Norman Christmas Holiday Parade will feature bands, floats and horses beginning at 6 p.m. Dec. 15 (new date). Set in a festive spirit complete with a variety of Christmas characters, this annual holiday parade will also feature an appearance by the man of the month, Santa Claus.The parade takes place in Downtown Norman, stretching across Main Street beginning at Pickard Ave.

Historic Sooner Theatre will stage " A Christmas Story Musical" Dec. 7 & 9 and 14-16. The holiday favorite movie tells the familiar tale of Ralphie's gift quest against musical scores.

On Dec. 14, Parks and Recreation will host Winterfest at Legacy Park. Activities include a photo with Santa, gift-wrapping contest, arts and crafts along with holiday musical performances.

Open nightly until early January, the annual Downs Family Christmas Lights Display shines from 6 p.m. to Midnight. Once featured on ABC Network's "Great Christmas Light Fight," the display is a Norman holiday season tradition. The display is located at 2900 72nd Ave. SE. and accepts donations to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma on site.
