Not a Sports Fan? What to Do in Norman
While Norman is well-known for athletics, there is something for everyone in this charming college town.
At first glance it may seem like Norman is a sports town and a sports town only. The first thing most people probably think of when they think 'Norman' is something along the lines of the Oklahoma Sooners, the Sooner Schooner, or Bob Stoops.
In Norman (and in all Oklahoma, if we’re being honest), sports is a year-round phenomena starting with football in the fall that then transitions to basketball in the winter and the finale of baseball and softball in the spring. And then the sports calendar circles back to football once again only to repeat year after year. In a town that can’t stop shouting “Boomer Sooner,” it’s easy to think that if you aren’t into sports, then Norman just isn’t for you.
But that thought couldn’t be more wrong!
While Norman has a lot to offer the sports fanatic in everyone’s life, there is plenty to do that does not involve athletics.
Campus Corner
Though I would not recommend going on game day, historic Campus Corner is a great place to explore. There are lots of boutiques and unique eats to keep you busy for the day.
Downtown Norman, Main Street
If you are into antique shopping, then head to downtown Norman on Main Street. There you can find stores that sell rustic furniture, vintage decorations and other items. And it’s also a great area to get a bite to eat, especially if you’re looking for Norman original restaurants.
The University of Oklahoma
OU is one of the most beautiful college campuses in the country. The distinctive Cherokee Gothic architecture as seen across campus is a site to behold. It’s a great place to explore, take a relaxing walk or have a picnic. But a definite must-see is the great reading room in Bizzell Memorial Library. You might just think you’ve died and gone to Hogwarts.
Lake Thunderbird
So you might not be into sports, but maybe you’re still outdoorsy. The lake is a great place to hike some trails or go fishing or camping all while staying close to civilization.
Sam Noble Museum of Natural History
Maybe you’re a kid at heart or you’re bringing some kiddos along. At the Sam Noble Museum, you can see dinosaur fossils and Native American artifacts found in Oklahoma.
Fred Jones Jr. Art Museum
Want to see world famous artwork but don’t want to travel all the way to the Louvre in Paris? Norman has you covered. The Fred Jones Museum is home to famous works by Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh and the likes of many more accomplished artists.
Jacobson House Native Art Center
If you like what you see at the Fred Jones but want something a little different, check out the Jacobson House. It’s not only a historic landmark, but it is home to a variety of Native American fine arts.
Firehouse Art Center
Or maybe you want a taste of the local art scene. Firehouse Art hosts exhibitions consisting of local talent and statewide artists. And if you’re planning on an extended stay, you might consider taking a class. You could be the next Picasso!
Sooner Theatre
Now that you’ve seen what Norman has to offer in the way of still art, you should catch a show here. It might not be Broadway, but it will be worth your while.
