The holiday season is here, and Norman shoppers have a special date to mark on their calendars: Small Business Saturday on November 30. For 15 years, this tradition has been more than a shopping event. It has been a heartfelt love letter to local businesses and the communities that thrive because of them.

But what exactly is Small Business Saturday? Launched in 2010 by American Express, this nationwide celebration was designed to spotlight the vital role of small businesses in our economy and encourage shoppers to keep it local. Since then, it has become a cornerstone of holiday traditions, especially here in Norman.

Why Small Businesses Matter

Norman is not just known for incredible football and a thriving arts scene. It is also home to a tapestry of unique businesses that make our city shine. Small Business Saturday celebrates this local magic by encouraging all of us to shop small and support the entrepreneurs who make Norman feel like home.

Here is what shopping small means for our community:

  • Boosts the Local Economy: Every dollar spent locally goes toward creating jobs and supporting other Norman businesses.
  • Celebrates Local Talent: Norman shops are bursting with creativity, from handmade crafts to quirky, one-of-a-kind treasures you will not find anywhere else.
  • Fosters Community Connections: Every conversation with a shop owner or sip at a neighborhood café deepens the sense of belonging in our city.

Making the Most of Small Business Saturday

Whether you are a seasoned pro or this is your first time joining the fun, here is how to make the most of Small Business Saturday in Norman:

  1. Start Early, Shop Smart. The early bird does not just get the worm. It gets the best deals and the most coveted finds. Many businesses offer exclusive holiday specials, so make a game plan and shop with purpose.
  2. Eat, Shop, Repeat. Shopping on an empty stomach? Never. Refuel at one of Norman’s beloved cafés or bakeries. Check out our Food & Drink page for tasty pit stops.
  3. Spread the Joy, Share the Finds. Found something you love? Snap a pic, tag @VisitNorman, and use hashtags like #ShopNorman and #SmallBusinessSaturday. Your post might just inspire someone else to join in.
  4. Go Big with Gift Cards. When in doubt, go for the gift that always fits. Local businesses offer versatile gift cards that let your loved ones pick their own perfect present.
