December on a Dime

“It’s the thought that counts” - a.k.a. the frugal shopper’s go-to mantra during the Christmas season. If this phrase is all too familiar, then you know better than anyone that the holidays must be approached with a certain “creative” mindset.

Running low on low-cost ways to celebrate the 2017 season? We’re here to help with our Top 8 budget-friendly holiday happenings!

1. Dec. 1, 5:30-7 p.m. - Winterfest, Legacy Park

Start your December off right with Winterfest - Norman’s (completely free!) holiday celebration! Hosted at Legacy Park, this festival includes inflatables, musical performances, holiday arts and crafts, a gift-wrapping contest and even a meet-and-greet with Santa himself.

2. Dec. 8, 6-6:30 p.m. - Tree Lighting Ceremony, Andrews Park

Partake in the holiday magic at the Andrews ParkTree Lighting! Gather around the park with friends and family as you wait for that magical moment when all the lights of the trees and shrubbery begin to twinkle together to signal the start of the Christmas season!

3. Dec. 8 & 9, 6-9 p.m. - Norman Art Walk

This December, instead of the usual one-night-only “2nd Friday Art Walk,” Norman’s local Art Walk will actually be held two separate back-to-back days on both Friday, Dec. 8th and Saturday, Dec. 9th! Both Art Walks will last from 6-9 p.m. and will include local art and food trucks up and down Main St. within Downtown's Walker Arts District.

4. Dec. 8 & 9, 6-9 p.m. - Holiday Open House at the Moore-Lindsay Victorian House

Looking for that classic Hallmark holiday moment? Take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage while you sip on refreshments to the sound of live music at the Moore-Lindsay Victorian House’s very own Holiday Open House. Even St. Nick himself will make an appearance at this completely free event!

5. Dec. 9, 5 p.m. - Norman Christmas Parade

What better way to kick-off the holiday season than with Norman’s annual Christmas Parade? Stretching across Main Street, from Pickard to Crawford Ave., this totally free event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 9th at 5 o’clock in the evening. Norman’s 2017 Christmas Parade will be especially exciting considering this year’s switch from a morning event to an evening event - perfect for enjoying all the floats’ beautiful Christmas light displays!

6. Dec. 8-10 & 15-17 - “A Christmas Story" Musical, Sooner Theatre

You won’t want to miss the Sooner Theatre’s rendition of everyone’s favorite classic holiday tale, A Christmas Story Musical. Make your way over to Downtown’s Sooner Theatre for any of the eight performances - get your tickets here.

7. All Month - Legacy Trail Christmas Walk

Cutting right through the heart of Downtown Norman is Legacy Trail - a concrete-paved trail devoted to telling the story of Norman through plaques and statues denoting historical milestones and local legends. During the holiday season, Christmas decor including snowmen, Santa Claus, reindeer, and more line the sidewalk providing a winter wonderland for anyone craving some classic holiday cheer.

8. All Month - Downs Family Christmas Light Ministry

Just south of State Highway 9 is the Downs Family Christmas Light Display - and, with more than 18 miles of light strands used, this display is far from your average string of light-up icicles hanging from a roof. As a way to promote and gather donations (including either cash and/or canned goods) for the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, the Downs Family decorates their property in over 280,000 LED lights synchronized to the tune of different holiday music selections each year. All you’ve got to do is drive up, sit back, and tune in to 99.9 FM while you enjoy Norman’s biggest and best Christmas light extravaganza!
